We have been wanting to post this shoot for a very long time! It’s the new year now, so why not add “catching up on blogging” to our New Year’s resolutions list? It’s only January 2nd, so I will say that I am off to a good start! I photographed this family in the fall and it was one of those perfect fall evenings up in Big Sky, Montana. The Hayek family rented a vacation rental right on the beautiful Gallatin River. We did have some mosquitos to fight with, but other than that the surroundings and evening light were certainly in our favor. I love love love every chance I can get to escape to the mountains for a Big Sky family session. Have you ever been up Hyalite Canyon?  It’s a great place to recreate in the summer and in the winter, from paddle boarding to back country skiing, they pretty much have it all.  It’s also a very photogenic area. :) Stephanie contacted me just a couple weeks before Christmas seeing if I had any spots open for a last minute shoot for her Christmas card.  I am so glad I did, because it was wonderful meeting these two!  It was a chilly day to be out and the wet snow just kept coming down and so I was very thankful for Stephanie and John’s positive and cheery attitudes.  I think they ended up getting a pretty suitable Christmas card photo too. Family portrait sessions in the winter can be so much fun!  We were blessed with the perfect combo of above freezing weather, fresh snow and a beautiful backdrop.  The Scheidt family travels to a ski destination from Illinois every year and Big Sky has become one of their favorites.  I was so excited to workout my schedule so I could go be a Big Sky photographer for a day!  I love an excuse to make the quick 45-minute drive through the canyon and up to one of the most glorious places.  What a great idea to plan a photoshoot while you are on vacation with your whole family in a winter wonderland environment!

If you are reading this and have never made a trip out to Big Sky, Montana, you gotta go!  It is certainly one of my favorite ski destinations with no lift lines, tons of terrain for all levels (coined “The Biggest Skiing in America”), and you can ski off the very tip-top of the mountain, Lone Peak.  I should probably mention that it’s where Roy and I got married so my opinion may be a little biased. ;)

Wouldn’t everyone agree that fall in Bozeman, Montana was absolutely gorgeous this year?!  We got the perfect balance of cold days and warm days.  When it was brisk out we would cozy up with some hot soup and get excited about skiing and on warm days we would pretend it was still summer with flip flops and bike rides. Cheers to fall in Montana (with your choice of a pumpkin spice latte, red wine, black coffee or a mug of chili)!

Julie and Jon had just celebrated their one year wedding anniversary and they asked me to capture some photos of them during this season of their life.  It was so fun getting to know these two and being their local Bozeman family photographer.  This time of year is so much fun for us, as we transition out of weddings and into portrait sessions to make some keepsake family photos for Christmas cards!  I will be sharing some more sessions soon. We like to call these Married-And-So-In-Love sessions!  Liz and David have been married for 8 years and they wanted to get together for some photos for their Christmas cards.  We walked around their beautiful neighborhood in Bozeman, MT and got some great shots!  It may not look like winter in Montana- it was 55 degrees during their shoot and no snow on the ground- but we enjoyed it anyway!  I suppose it was as if we were doing Christmas photos in Texas or something. ;-)
